Stretched Pattie Hamburgers [barbecue]

  • 1 pound [454 g] ground beef
  • 2 carrots, grated
  • 2 stalks celery, finely chopped
  • 1 sprig parsley, finely chopped
  • 1 sweet green pepper, membranes removed and seeded, finely chopped
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon [15 mL] steak sauce
  • 1 egg
  • Dash salt
  • Dash pepper
  • 2 tablespoons [30 mL] cooking oil
  • 8 hamburgers buns
  • 1/2 cup [115 g] melted butter or margarine
  • 8 large tomato slices
  • Unpeeled cucumber slices
  • Prepared mustard [optional]
  • Preheat barbecue until charcoals become gray, almost white.
  • Into a glass bowl, mix together ground beef, grated carrots, finely chopped celery, parsley, sweet green pepper, onion and garlic, steak sauce, egg, salt, pepper and oil.
  • Shape mixture into 8 patties, preferably the size of the hamburger buns.
  • Grill patties onto hot barbecue rack until done to taste.
  • Split hamburger buns into halves and toast cut sides onto barbecue rack; brush toasted sides with melted butter or margarine.
  • Top bottom halves of hamburger buns with a ground beef pattie.
  • Top each with a slice of tomato, then with quite a few fresh crisp unpeeled cucumber slices.
  • If desired, top each with a little prepared mustard, then with top hamburger bun halves.
