- 1/2 cup [115 g] shortening
- 1 cup [250 mL] brown sugar
- 1/2 cup [125 mL] molasses
- 1/2 teaspoon [2.5 mL] salt
- 1 teaspoon [5 mL] cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon [2.5 mL] ground clove
- 2/3 cup [160 mL] boiling water
- 1 teaspoon [5 mL] baking soda
- 2 cups [280 g] flour
- 1 teaspoon [5 mL] baking powder
- 2 teaspoons [10 mL] ginger
- 2 eggs, well beaten

- Cream together shortening and brown sugar.
- Mix in molasses, salt, cinnamon and ground clove.
- Pour boiling water over baking soda; add to mixture.
- Sift together flour, baking powder and ginger; add to mixture, along with beaten eggs.
- Mix, then beat all the ingredients together.
- Line a bread loaf pan with thick brown paper; pour dough into pan.
- Bake into a preheated [325°F to 350°F / 160°C to 180°C] oven, for 40 minutes.
