Baking Powder Biscuits

  • 2 cups [280 g] all-purpose flour, sifted
  • 4 teaspoons [20 mL] baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon [5 mL] salt
  • 1/4 cup [60 g] shortening
  • 3/4 cup [190 mL] milk
  • Preheat oven to 450 to 475°F [230 to 246°C].
  • Sift together flour, baking powder and salt.
  • Cut shortening into flour mixture, until mixture resembles cornmeal.
  • Pour in milk, mixing until smooth.
  • Knead dough until smooth.
  • Flatten or roll dough until 12-inch [1.3-cm] thick.
  • Cut dough using a biscuit cutter; arrange onto a greased baking sheet.
  • Bake into preheated oven, for 12 to 15 minutes.
