- Approximately 1 cup [225 g] shortening
- 2 cups [500 mL] cornmeal
- 1 tablespoon [8.75 g] flour
- 1 teaspoon [5 mL] salt
- 1/2 teaspoon [2.5 mL] baking powder
- 1 cup [250 mL] milk
- 1 egg, lightly beaten
- 2 tablespoons [30 mL] chopped onion

- Melt approximately 1 inch [2.5 cm] shortening into a frypan, to 375°F [190°C].
- Beat together cornmeal, flour, salt, baking powder, milk, beaten egg and chopped onion, until well mixed.
- Spoon a few tablespoons [30 mL] mixture at a time into hot shortening.
- Fry until golden on both sides.
- Drain well, onto paper toweling.
