Orange Drink

Comments: A refreshing drink, made the old-fashioned way, that will please all, young and old; we should always have some on hand.
Citric acid can be found at drugstores.
Servings: 18 to 20 [approximately 5 cups / l.25 L syrup]

Syrup
  • 3 cups [600 g] sugar
  • 3 cups [750 mL] water
  • 2 tablespoons [30 mL] grated orange rind
  • 1 tablespoon [15 mL] grated lemon rind
  • 2 tablespoons [30 mL] citric acid
  • 3/4 cup [190 mL] orange juice
  • 1/3 cup [80 mL] lemon juice
To Serve
  • Crushed ice
  • Soda water or water
Syrup
  • Into a large casserole, mix together sugar, water, grated orange and lemon rinds.
  • Bring to a boil; lower heat and simmer for 5 minutes.
  • Take away from heat; stir in citric acid, orange juice and lemon juice.
  • Cool.
  • Pour syrup into a clean jar; refrigerate.
To Serve
  • To serve, half-fill a tall glass with crushed ice.
  • Pour in approximately 1/4 cup [60 mL] syrup and 3/4 cup [190 mL] soda water or water.
  • Stir; serve immediately.
