- 2 cups [280 g] flour
- 1/2 teaspoon [2.5 mL] salt
- 1 teaspoon [5 mL] baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon [2.5 mL] baking soda
- 1/4 cup [60 g] lard, shortening or butter
- Approximately 3/4 cup [190 mL] buttermilk or sour cream

- Combine flour, salt, baking powder and baking soda.
- Cut in lard, shortening or butter, until mixture resembles cornmeal.
- Add enough buttermilk or sour cream to get a rather soft dough.
- Turn onto a floured surface; knead gently 5 or 6 times.
- Roll-out dough gently until approximately 3/4-inch [2-cm] thick.
- Cut-out rounds; arrange onto a greased baking sheet.
- Bake into a preheated 425°F [220°C] oven for 15 to 28 minutes, until golden brown.
