Raisin Molasses Gems

  • 3/4 cup [175 g] shortening
  • 1 cup [200 g] sugar
  • 1/4 cup [60 mL] molasses
  • 1 egg
  • 2 cups [280 g] flour
  • 2 teaspoons [10 mL] baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon [5 mL] cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon [2.5 mL] ground clove
  • 1/2 teaspoon [2.5 mL] ground ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon [1 mL] salt
  • 1 cup [250 mL] raisins
  • Sugar
  • Cream together shortening and sugar, at medium speed of an electric mixer.
  • Add molasses and egg; mix well.
  • Combine together flour, baking soda, cinnamon, clove, ginger and salt; add to creamy mixture.
  • Mix well.
  • Stir in raisins.
  • Cover and, if desired, chill for 1 hour for easy shaping.
  • Shape dough into 1-inch [2.5-cm] balls.
  • Well coat balls with sugar, rolling balls into sugar.
  • Arrange onto a greased baking sheet.
  • Bake into a preheated 350°F [180°C] oven, for 10 to 12 minutes.
