- 3/4 cup [175 g] shortening
- 1 cup [200 g] sugar
- 1/4 cup [60 mL] molasses
- 1 egg
- 2 cups [280 g] flour
- 2 teaspoons [10 mL] baking soda
- 1 teaspoon [5 mL] cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon [2.5 mL] ground clove
- 1/2 teaspoon [2.5 mL] ground ginger
- 1/4 teaspoon [1 mL] salt
- 1 cup [250 mL] raisins
- Sugar

- Cream together shortening and sugar, at medium speed of an electric mixer.
- Add molasses and egg; mix well.
- Combine together flour, baking soda, cinnamon, clove, ginger and salt; add to creamy mixture.
- Mix well.
- Stir in raisins.
- Cover and, if desired, chill for 1 hour for easy shaping.
- Shape dough into 1-inch [2.5-cm] balls.
- Well coat balls with sugar, rolling balls into sugar.
- Arrange onto a greased baking sheet.
- Bake into a preheated 350°F [180°C] oven, for 10 to 12 minutes.
