- 2 cups [280 g] flour
- 2 teaspoons [10 mL] baking powder
- 1 teaspoon [5 mL] baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon [2.5 mL] salt
- 1/2 cup [100 g] sugar
- 1 1/2 cup [375 L] brown sugar
- 1/2 cup [115 g] shortening
- 2 egg yolks
- 1 teaspoon [5 mL] vanilla
- 3 tablespoons [45 mL] milk
- 1 [6-ounce / 170 g] chocolate chips
- 2 egg whites
- 3/4 cup [190 mL] chopped nuts

- Preheat oven to 325°F [160°C].
- Sift together flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt.
- Cream together sugar, 1/2 cup [255 L] of brown sugar and shortening; add egg yolks, vanilla and milk to creamed mixture.
- Mix in flour mixture.
- Press dough into a 10 x 15-inch [25 x 38-cm] greased baking pan.
- Sprinkle dough all over with chocolate chips; press into dough.
- Into a clean bowl, beat egg whites until stiff.
- Add remaining 1 cup [250 mL] brown sugar and beat until stiff.
- Spread meringue all over dough, then sprinkle all over with chopped nuts.
- Bake into preheated oven, for 30 to 35 minutes.
- Leave to cool completely, onto a wire rack, before cutting into bars.
