- 1 1/2 cups [210 g] sifted flour
- 1 teaspoon [5 mL] baking soda
- 1 teaspoon [5 mL] salt
- 1 cup [225 g] shortening
- 3/4 cup [190 mL] brown sugar
- 3/4 cup [150 g] sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup [250 mL] hot water
- 1 cup [250 mL] finely chopped nuts
- 1 ounce [28 g] chocolate chips
- 2 cups [500 mL] rolled oats
- 1 teaspoon [5 mL] vanilla

- Preheat oven to 375°F [190°C].
- Sift together flour, baking soda and salt; set aside.
- Cream shortening until light; slowly mix in brown sugar and sugar, until light.
- Beat in eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.
- Stir in hot water.
- Well mix in reserved dry ingredients, nuts, chocolate chips, rolled oats and vanilla.
- Drop mixture, 1/2 teaspoon [2.5 mL] at a time, approximately 1 inch [2.5 cm] apart, onto a greased cookie sheet.
- Bake cookies into preheated oven for 8 to 10 minutes, until lightly browned.
