- 1 cup [140 g] sifted all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup [100 g] sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon [2.5 mL] baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon [2.5 mL] baking soda
- 1/4 teaspoon [1 mL] salt
- 1/2 cup [125 mL] brown sugar
- 1/2 cup [115 g] shortening
- 1 egg
- 1/4 teaspoon [1 mL[ vanilla
- 3/4 cup [190 mL] quick-cooking rolled oats
- 1/4 cup [60 mL] chopped walnuts [optional]
- Sugar [to dip in cookie dough balls]

- Preheat oven to 375°F [190°C].
- Sift together flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt.
- Add half [1/4 cup / 60 mL] of brown sugar, shortening, egg and vanilla.
- Beat well.
- Stir in rolled oats and chopped walnuts.
- Shape mixture into small balls.
- Dip dough balls into a little sugar.
- Arrange dough balls apart, onto an ungreased baking sheet.
- Bake into preheated oven for 10 to 12 minutes, until just golden.
- Leave to cool for a few minutes, then transfer onto wire racks to cool completely.
