- Preaheat oven to 375°F [190°C - Gas 5].
- Using a wooden spoon, beat softened butter until soft.
- Beat in caster sugar, until light and fluffy.
- Into a separate bowl, beat the egg using a fork; beating, slowly mix the egg into butter mixture.
- Then mix in flour and vanilla.
- With your hands, shape dough into a ball.
- Lightly flour a work surface; roll out dough until of about the same thickness as a coin.
- Using cutters, cut cookies into stars, hearts, christmas trees...; using a skewer, make a hole into each for the ribbon.
- Transfer cookies onto a baking sheet.
- Bake cookies into preheated oven, for 8 to 10 minutes.
- Leave to harden for a couple of minutes, then transfer cookies onto a wire rack; leave to cool completely.
- For the glaze, sift icing sugar into a large bowl; slowly mix in enough hot water to make a soft, firm mixture, about 2 to 3 tablespoons [30 to 45 mL].
- Divide glaze into 3 or 4 bowls; being careful not to mix the colours, add 1/2 teaspoon [2.5 mL] food colouring to each one.
- Using a table knife, spread cookies with glaze.
- Decorate cookies, and tie a ribbon into each hole.
