Italian Peppered Chocolate Cookies
Comments: If desired, dip completely cooled cookies into chocolate and/or white frosting.

  • 4 cups [560 g] flour
  • 1 teaspoon [5 mL] nutmeg
  • 12 teaspoon [2.5 mL] ground clove
  • 1 teaspoon [5 mL] ground black pepper
  • 1 cup [250 mL] cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons [10 mL] baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon [2.5 mL] baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon [5 mL] cinnamon
  • 1 cup [200 g] sugar
  • 1 cup [225 g] shortening
  • 2 cups [500 mL] milk
  • Preheat oven to 350°F [180°C].
  • Into a large bowl, mix together all dry ingredients [flour, nutmeg, ground clove, ground black pepper, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon and sugar].
  • Make a well in the middle; add shortening and pour in milk.
  • With your fingers, well mix together all the ingredients [dough will be really sticky].
  • Shape dough into tiny balls, of the size of nuts.
  • Arrange onto a cookie sheet.
  • Bake into preheated oven, for 10 to 12 minutes.
  • Transfer onto wire racks; leave to cool completely.
