Apple Cocoa Brownies

You may want to sprinkle these brownies with icing sugar or cut mixture into bars. If you have a real sweet tooth, try frosting these brownies with a plain butter icing and then drizzle icing with melted chocolate, for a professional touch.
  • 1/2 cup [125 mL] butter or margarine
  • 1 cup [250 mL] brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 teaspoons [10 mL] vanilla
  • 3/4 cup [190 mL] milk
  • 2 cups [500 mL] unsifted all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon [5 mL] salt
  • 1 teaspoon [5 mL] baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon [2.5 mL] baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon [5 mL] cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon [2.5 mL] nutmeg
  • 6 tablespoons [90 mL] cocoa powder
  • 2 cups [500 mL] peeled grated apples [peel and grate apples just before adding, to prevent apples from browning]
  • Cream together butter or margarine and brown sugar.
  • Well beat in eggs.
  • Stir in vanilla and milk.
  • Mix together flour, salt, baking soda, nutmeg and cocoa powder.
  • Add to first mixture, beating until thoroughly combined.
  • Grate apples; immediately stir grated apples into mixture.
  • Spread into a buttered 9 x 13 x 2-inch [23 x 33 x 5-cm] pan.
  • Bake into a preheated 350°F [180°C] oven, for 35 to 40 minutes.
  • Cool on rack before cutting, into squares.
