- 2 cups [280 g] flour
- 3 tablespoons [45 g] sugar
- 1 tablespoon [15 mL] baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon [2.5 mL] salt
- 1/4 cup [60 g] softened shortening
- 1 egg
- 2/3 cup [160 mL] milk
Garnishings
- 1 cup [250 mL] thin apple slices
- 1/4 cup [60 mL] almond halves
- 2 tablespoons [30 g] melted butter
- 1/4 cup [60 g] sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon [2.5 mL] cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon [1 mL] nutmeg

- Preheat oven to 400°F [200°C].
- Into a bowl, sift together flour, sugar, baking powder and salt.
- Cut in shortening, until mixture resembles large peas.
- Into a clean bowl, beat together egg and milk; set aside.
- Prepare and measure separately each garnishing ingredient; reserve.
- Mix reserved egg/milk mixture into dry ingredients, until just moistened.
- Pour dough into a square 8-inch [20-cm] pan.
- Arrange apple slices and almond halves all over dough.
- Mix together remaining garnishings ingredients [melted butter, sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg].
- Sprinkle all over apple slices and almond halves.
- Bake into preheated oven, for 30 to 35 minutes.
