American-Style Cheeseburgers

  • 1 pound [454 g] ground beef
  • 1 teaspoon [5 mL] salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon [0.5 mL] pepper
  • 2 teaspoons [10 mL] catsup
  • 4 slices Old Cheddar cheese
  • 4 slices tomato
  • 4 slices Bermuda onion
  • 4 hamburger buns, halved, toasted then buttered
  • Delicately mix together ground beef, salt and pepper.
  • Shape ground beef into 4 approximately 1-inch [2.5-cm] thick patties.
  • Fry ground beef patties over medium heat for 8 minutes on each side for medium done patties, or to taste.
  • Then, evenly coat patties with catsup.
  • Top each with a slice Old Cheddar cheese [the heat from the patties will slightly melt the cheese].
  • Top each slice of cheese with a slice of tomato, then with a slice Bermuda onion.
  • Transfer garnished ground beef patties onto lower halves of toasted buttered hamburger buns.
  • Top with remaining hamburger bun halves, and serve.
