- 1 tablespoon [15 g] butter
- 2 tablespoons [30 mL] oil
- 1 onion, chopped
- 1 cup [250 mL] any grain [your choice - see below]
- Broth, flavor to taste
Special Touches
- 1/4 pound [113 g] freshly sliced mushrooms
- 1 carrot, diced
- 1 1/2 teaspoons [7.5 mL] marjoram, thyme or rosemary
- Canadian bacon cut into 1/4-inch [6-mm] cubes, to taste
- 1/4 cup [60 mL] raisins

1/2 cup [125 mL] thawed frozen peas

- Into a casserole, heat together butter and oil, over medium heat.
- Stir-fry chopped onion for 5 minutes.
- Mix in chosen grain; stir-fry for 1 minute.
- Pour in broth, cover and lower heat to low.
- Simmer until tender.
Special Touches
- Three [3] to 4 minutes before adding grain, stir-fry mushroom slices along with chopped onion.

- Two [2] to 3 minutes before adding grain, stir-fry carrot dices along with chopped onion.
or
- Just before adding grain, stir in marjoram, thyme or rosemary.

- Ten [10] minutes before the end of grain cooking time, mix in Canadian bacon cubes.
