- 2 cans cream of tomato
- 2 cans [5 1/2 oz each] tomato paste
- 3 cans round tomatoes [cut into small pieces]
- 1 cup olive oil [or vegetable oil]
- 1 teaspoon [5 mL] garlic salt
- 4 teaspoons [20 mL] crushed red peppers
- 1 teaspoon [5 mL] salt
- 1 teaspoon [5 mL] pepper
- 2 pinches baking soda
- 4 bay leaves
- Carrots cut into small pieces
- Celery cut into small pieces
- 3 pounds [1 4 kg] ground pork
- 3 pounds [1.4 kg] ground beef
- 4 onions
- Butter

- Mix together all ingredients except pork, beef and onions in a large casserole dish.
- Cook over medium heat, stirring regularly.
- Melt butter in a frying pan; cook ground pork and beef separately; drain to eliminate excess fat.
- Add to first mixture.
- Melt some butter in a frying pan to brown onions cut into small pieces.
- Add to mixture.
- Heat to boiling over medium heat.
- Lower heat to low and simmer uncovered for 3 hours.
- Stir regularly.
