Great Spaghetti Sauce

Comments: When it is time to add them to the preparation, the tomatoes and onions can be put through mixer. Freezes very well.

  • 2 cans cream of tomato
  • 2 cans [5 1/2 oz each] tomato paste
  • 3 cans round tomatoes [cut into small pieces]
  • 1 cup olive oil [or vegetable oil]
  • 1 teaspoon [5 mL] garlic salt
  • 4 teaspoons [20 mL] crushed red peppers
  • 1 teaspoon [5 mL] salt
  • 1 teaspoon [5 mL] pepper
  • 2 pinches baking soda
  • 4 bay leaves
  • Carrots cut into small pieces
  • Celery cut into small pieces
  • 3 pounds [1 4 kg] ground pork
  • 3 pounds [1.4 kg] ground beef
  • 4 onions
  • Butter
  • Mix together all ingredients except pork, beef and onions in a large casserole dish.
  • Cook over medium heat, stirring regularly.
  • Melt butter in a frying pan; cook ground pork and beef separately; drain to eliminate excess fat.
  • Add to first mixture.
  • Melt some butter in a frying pan to brown onions cut into small pieces.
  • Add to mixture.
  • Heat to boiling over medium heat.
  • Lower heat to low and simmer uncovered for 3 hours.
  • Stir regularly.
