- 1 [28-ounce / 796-mL] can whole tomatoes
- 2 medium-size onions, chopped
- 2 bay leaves
- 1 tablespoon [15 mL] salt substitute
- Pepper and salt, to taste
- 1/4 teaspoon [1 mL] crushed chiles, or to taste
- 1 teaspoon [5 mL] oregano
- 2 tablespoons [30 g] sugar
- Cornstarch [optional]
- Water [optional]

- Into a large enough casserole, mix together tomatoes, onions, bay leaves, salt substitute, peper and salt, crushed chiles, oregano and sugar.
- Simmer over low heat for 30 to 45 minutes.
- If desired, thicken sauce with a mixture of cornstarch and water.
