Pizza or Pasta Sauce

Comments: If desired, replace canned tomatoes with 1 [19-ounce / 540-mL] can tomato juice.
Forget the cornstarch [or dry spaghetti sauce mix] and only add oregano and basil to get an excellent sauce to serve over pasta noodles such as spaghetti....
Servings: Enough for 4 large pizza crusts
Approximately 4 cups [1 L] sauce

  • 1/4 cup [60 mL] oil
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 small onion, minced
  • 1 [28-ounce / 796-mL] can tomatoes with juice, cut into small dices
  • 6 ounces [170 mL] tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon [15 mL] Italian seasoning
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons [7.5 mL] oregano
    +
    1 1/2 teaspoons [7.5 mL] basil
    +
    2 teaspoons [10 mL] cornstarch
    or
    1 tablespoon [15 mL] dry spaghetti sauce mix
  • Into a saucepan, brown together minced garlic and onion into hot oil.
  • Mix in cut tomatoes with juice, tomato paste, Italian seasoning, oregano, basil and cornstarch, or dry spaghetti sauce mix.
  • Bring to a boil; leave to simmer slowly for 15 minutes.
