- 4 cups [1 L] whole fresh figs, rinsed
- 1/3 cup [75 g] sugar
- 1/3 cup [80 mL] water
- 1/4 teaspoon [1 mL] ground ginger
- 1/4 teaspoon [1 mL] allspice
- 1/4 teaspoon [1 mL] cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon [1 mL] ground clove
- 1 lemon, peeled, seeded and cut into small pieces

- Into a large casserole, mix together figs, sugar, water, ground ginger, allspice, cinnamon, ground clove and lemon pieces.
- Stirring often, bring to a boil over medium heat.
- Lower heat; allow to cook for 5 minutes, until syrup becomes thick brown.
- Leave to cool and pour into small containers.
- Refrigerate until cold before serving.
