- 1 cup [250 mL] tomato juice
- 2 tablespoons [30 mL] liquid beef concentrate
- 1 teaspoon [5 mL] vinegar
- 1 garlic clove
- Pinch dry mustard
- 1 tablespoon [15 mL] chopped celery leaves
- Paprika, to taste
- 1 bay leaf
- 2 tablespoons [30 mL] chopped onion
- 1/4 cup [60 mL] chopped sweet green pepper, membranes removed and seeded
- 2 teaspoons [10 mL] cornstarch
- 1 tablespoon [15 mL] cold water

- Combine all ingredients, except cornstarch and cold water, into a saucepan.
- Bring to a boil; simmer for 3 minutes.
- Strain.
- Mix together cornstarch and water; stir into sauce.
- Simmer over low heat, stirring until thickened.
