- 12 cups [3 L] water
- 1 beef bone
- 1/2 cup [125 mL] barley
- 2 medium carrots, diced
- 1 medium potato, diced
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 1/4 cup [60 mL] finely chopped celery
- 2 teaspoons [10 mL] salt
- Pepper, to taste

- Bring water to a boil.
- Add beef bone and barley; leave to simmer for 1 1/2 hours.
- Add all remaining ingredients.
- Leave to simmer for 30 minutes more before serving.
