- 1/3 cup [80 mL] shortening, softened
- 1 cup [250 mL] sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 cup [125 mL] all-purpose flour
- 1/3 cup [80 mL] cocoa
- 1/8 teaspoon [0.5 mL] salt
- 1 teaspoon [5 mL] vanilla
- 3/4 cup [190 mL] chopped nuts

- In a bowl, cream shortening until light and fluffy.
- Thoroughly mix in sugar and eggs.
- Sift together flour, cocoa and salt; stir into creamy mixture.
- Stir in vanilla.
- Spread into a thin layer, into a 15 x 10-inch [38 x 25-cm] pan.
- Sprinkle with chopped nuts.
- Bake in a preheated 400°F [200°C] oven, for 15 minutes.
- Remove from oven; immediately cut into 2-inch [5-cm] squares and remove from pan.
