Chocolate Squares

  • 1/3 cup [80 mL] shortening, softened
  • 1 cup [250 mL] sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup [125 mL] all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup [80 mL] cocoa
  • 1/8 teaspoon [0.5 mL] salt
  • 1 teaspoon [5 mL] vanilla
  • 3/4 cup [190 mL] chopped nuts
  • In a bowl, cream shortening until light and fluffy.
  • Thoroughly mix in sugar and eggs.
  • Sift together flour, cocoa and salt; stir into creamy mixture.
  • Stir in vanilla.
  • Spread into a thin layer, into a 15 x 10-inch [38 x 25-cm] pan.
  • Sprinkle with chopped nuts.
  • Bake in a preheated 400°F [200°C] oven, for 15 minutes.
  • Remove from oven; immediately cut into 2-inch [5-cm] squares and remove from pan.
