- 1 cup [225 g] butter
- 1 pound [454 g] brown sugar [2 1/4 cups - 560 mL]
- Dash salt
- 1 cup [250 mL] corn syrup
- 1 [10 1/2-ounce / 300-mL] can sweetened condensed milk
- 1 teaspoon [5 mL] vanilla

- Butter a 9-inch [23-cm] square pan.
- Melt butter into a heavy 3-quart [3-L] heavy saucepan.
- Thoroughly stir in brown sugar and salt.
- Stir in corn syrup, until well mixed.
- Still stirring, slowly pour in sweetened condensed milk.
- Cook, stirring over medium heat to firm-ball stage, 245°F [118°C] onto a candy thermometer, for approximately 12 to 15 minutes.
- Remove from heat and delicately just stir in vanilla.
- Pour into prepared pan.
- Leave to cool completely, before cutting into small squares.
