  • Boiling water
  • 2 pounds [1 kg] green [string] beans
  • 2 tablespoons [30 mL] butter or margarine [1/4-stick]
  • 1/2 teaspoon [2.5 mL] salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon [0.5 mL] pepper
  • Into a 12-inch [30-cm] skillet, over high heat, into 1 inch [2.5 cm] deep boiling water, bring green beans to a boil.
  • Reduce heat to low; cover and simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until beans are tender-crisp; drain.
  • Add butter or margarine, salt and pepper.
  • Toss to coat well.
