Dauphine-Style Fried Potatoes

  • 1/2 clove garlic
  • 1/2 teaspoon [2.5 mL] salt
  • 9 ounces [255 g] frozen French fries
  • 3 tablespoons [45 g] margarine
  • 1 tablespoon [8.75 g] flour
  • 1/2 cup [115 g] grated Swiss cheese
  • 1/2 teaspoon [2.5 mL] pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon [1 mL] onion salt
  • 1/2 cup [125 mL] milk
  • Preheat oven to 350°F [180°C].
  • Rub a 9 x 13-inch [23 x 33-cm] glass dish with garlic half.
  • Sprinkle salt over bottom of dish.
  • Layer half of French fries into prepared dish.
  • Into a bowl, combine margarine, flour, grated Swiss cheese, pepper and onion salt.
  • Heat milk; pour hot milk into grated cheese mixture.
  • Sprinkle half of cheese mixture over French fries.
  • Repeat layers.
  • Bake into preheated oven, for 30 minutes.
