- 5 1/2 cups [1.375 ml] sugar
- 2 cups [500 ml] molasses
- 2 cups [500 ml] water
- 1/2 teaspoon [2.5 ml] baking soda
- 1/4 cup [60 ml] butter
- Vanilla

- In a casserole, mix together sugar, molasses and water.
- Add baking soda.
- Cook over low hedat until sugar is completely dissolved.
- Add butter, greasing all around the casserole, so that mixture does not spill.
- Boil, without stirring, until a drop of the mixture forms a hard ball in cold water, or 500°F [260°C] on a candy thermometer.
- Add vanilla to taste.
- Pour mixture into a square greased pan.
- Cool.
- Stretch mixture, with buttered or floured hands, until pale.
- Cut into small pieces.
