- 5 1/2 cups [1.1 g] sugar
- 2 cups [500 mL] molasses
- 2 cups [500 mL] water
- 1/2 teaspoon [2.5 mL] baking soda
- 1/4 cup [60 g] butter
- Vanilla, to taste

- Into a large casserole, mix together sugar, molasses and water.
- Mix in baking soda.
- Cook over low heat until sugar is completely dissolved.
- Stir in butter greasing the casserole all around so that mixture does not spill.
- Boil, without until a candy thermometer registers 500°F [260°C], hard-ball stage in cold water.
- Stir in some vanilla.
- Pour mixture into a square greased pan.
- Leave mixture to cool until it can be handled.
- Butter or flour your hands then stretch mixture into a fine rope until pale.
- Cut into small pieces; wrap into individual wrappers.
