- 1 cup [250 ml] light brown sugar
- 3/4 cup [190 ml] butter
- 1 3/4 cups [440 ml] oatmeal
- 1 3/4 cups [440 ml] flour
- 1 teaspoon [5 ml] baking soda
Filling
- 1 pound [454 g] stoned dates
- 1 cup [250 ml] light brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon [15 ml] butter
- 1 1/2 cups [375 ml] hot water

- With a pastry cutter or your fingers, break and thoroughly mix together light brown sugar, butter, oatmeal, flour and baking soda.
- In a square [8 inch / 22 cm] pan, spread half of oatmeal mixture; firmly press mixture with your hand.
- Spread date mixture all over; cover with remaining oatmeal mixture.
- Bake in a 375°F [190°C] oven for 45 minutes, until golden brown.
Filling
- In a saucepan, mix and bring to boil dates, brown sugar, butter and hot water; boil until thickened.
