French Toasts

  • 1 cup [250 ml] milk
  • 2 eggs, well beaten
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 tablespoon [15 ml] sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon [1 ml] vanilla
  • 6 slices stale French bread, or 6 slices fresh bread
  • 2 tablespoons [30 ml] butter
  • 2 tablespoons [30 ml] oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon [2.5 ml] cinnamon [optional]
  • 2 teaspoons[10 ml] sugar [optional]
  • Cane syrup [optional]
  • In a bowl, mix together milk, beaten eggs with a pinch of salt, sugar and vanilla.
  • If using French bread, soak bread in egg mixture for a few minutes.
  • If using fresh bread, lightly toast and soak bread just before using.
  • In a heavy bottom frypan, heat butter.
  • Pour in oil; brown slices of bread on both sides, one or two at a time, until golden brown.
  • If desired, mix together cinnamon and sugar; serve toasts sprinkled with sugar mixture and cane syrup.
