- 1 cup [250 ml] milk
- 2 eggs, well beaten
- Pinch of salt
- 1 tablespoon [15 ml] sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon [1 ml] vanilla
- 6 slices stale French bread, or 6 slices fresh bread
- 2 tablespoons [30 ml] butter
- 2 tablespoons [30 ml] oil
- 1/2 teaspoon [2.5 ml] cinnamon [optional]
- 2 teaspoons[10 ml] sugar [optional]
- Cane syrup [optional]

- In a bowl, mix together milk, beaten eggs with a pinch of salt, sugar and vanilla.
- If using French bread, soak bread in egg mixture for a few minutes.
- If using fresh bread, lightly toast and soak bread just before using.
- In a heavy bottom frypan, heat butter.
- Pour in oil; brown slices of bread on both sides, one or two at a time, until golden brown.
- If desired, mix together cinnamon and sugar; serve toasts sprinkled with sugar mixture and cane syrup.
