Virginia Ham Straws
Comments: Serve these straws with a salad, a soup or at breakfast, along with a good coffee.

  • 2 cups [280 g] flour
  • 2 leveled teaspoons [10 mL] baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon [2.5 mL] salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon [1 mL] paprika
  • 1/8 teaspoon [0.5 mL] red pepper
  • 1/2 cup [115 g] butter
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup [125 mL] milk
  • 3/4 cup [190 mL] ground Virginia ham
  • Preheat oven to 350°F [180°C].
  • Sift together flour, baking powder, salt, paprika and red pepper 3 or 4 times.
  • Cut butter into flour mixture; break in egg, but do not beat.
  • Pour in milk and add ground ham; thoroughly mix.
  • Roll dough until really thin.
  • Cut dough into 1/4-inch [6-mm] wide, 4-inch [10-cm] long strips.
  • Arrange strips onto a buttered baking sheet, approximately 3/4 inch [2 cm] from each other.
  • Bake straws into preheated oven, until just lightly browned.
