- 2 cups [280 g] flour
- 2 leveled teaspoons [10 mL] baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon [2.5 mL] salt
- 1/4 teaspoon [1 mL] paprika
- 1/8 teaspoon [0.5 mL] red pepper
- 1/2 cup [115 g] butter
- 1 egg
- 1/2 cup [125 mL] milk
- 3/4 cup [190 mL] ground Virginia ham

- Preheat oven to 350°F [180°C].
- Sift together flour, baking powder, salt, paprika and red pepper 3 or 4 times.
- Cut butter into flour mixture; break in egg, but do not beat.
- Pour in milk and add ground ham; thoroughly mix.
- Roll dough until really thin.
- Cut dough into 1/4-inch [6-mm] wide, 4-inch [10-cm] long strips.
- Arrange strips onto a buttered baking sheet, approximately 3/4 inch [2 cm] from each other.
- Bake straws into preheated oven, until just lightly browned.
