- 3 cups [420 g] all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons [7.5 mL] cinnamon
- 1 1/2 teaspoons [7.5 mL] allspice
- 1 teaspoon [5 mL] ground clove
- 1 cup [225 g] butter
- 1 1/2 cups [300 g] sugar
- 4 eggs
- 1 teaspoon [5 mL] baking soda
- 1 cup [250 mL] buttermilk
- 1 cup [250 mL] jam

- Preheat oven to 350°F [180°C].
- Sift together flour, cinnamon, allspice and ground clove; set aside.
- Cream together butter and sugar, until light and smooth.
- Beat in eggs, one at a time, until well mixed in.
- Dissolve baking soda into buttermilk; mix into butter/eggs mixture, alternately with flour mixture.
- Fold in jam.
- Pour into 2 greased and floured 9-inch [23-cm] round cake pans.
- Bake into preheated oven, for approximately 30 minutes.
- Check to see if center of cake bounces back under the pressure of a finger.
- Cool onto racks.
