Plain Cabbage [microwave]

When buying, choose a frim, heavy cabbage.
If top leaves are bruised and yellowish or have been torn out to give the cabbage a fresh look, chances are that the cabbage is old, not really fresh.
  • 1 whole cabbage
Quartered Cabbage
  • 2 tablespoons [30 mL] water
  • 1/4 teaspoon [1 g] sugar
Whole Cabbage
  • Choose a medium-size cabbage; remove outer leaves.
  • Soak cabbage, up-side-down, for 20 minutes in cold water; drain cabbage well.
  • Wrap cabbage into plastic wrap; transfer cabbage into a bowl.
  • Microwave a whole cabbage on 'HIGH' for 15 to 18 minutes checking for doneness after 12 minutes with the tip of a knife.
Quartered Cabbage
  • Cut cabbage into 4 equal parts.
  • Arrange into a microwave-safe dish.
  • Pour in water; sprinkle with sugar.
  • A 1 1/2 to 2-pound [750 g to 1-kg] cabbage cut into 4 equal parts, will be cooked after 8 to 9 minutes, on 'HIGH'.
  • To evenly cook a quartered cabbage, move quarters around every 3 minutes while cooking.
Thinly Sliced or
Shredded Cabbage
  • Arrange into a large, but not too deep microwave-safe dish, so that it there is enough humidity circulating while cooking.
  • Tightly cover.
  • Microwave 4 cups [1 L] shredded cabbage covered on 'HIGH' for approximately 5 to 7 minutes.
