- 1 1/2 cups [210 g] flour
- 1/2 teaspoon [2.5 mL] baking soda
- 2 leveled teaspoons [10 mL] baking powder
- 1/4 cup [60 mL] cocoa powder
- 1/4 teaspoon [1 mL] salt
- 1/3 cup [75 g] butter or shortening
- 1 egg
- 1 cup [250 mL] brown sugar
- 1 cup [250 mL] sour milk
- 1 cup [250 mL] chopped nuts

- Preheat oven to 350°F [180°C].
- Sift together flour, baking soda, baking powder, cocoa powder and salt.
- Cream butter or shortening; beat in egg and brown sugar.
- Alternately with sour milk, mix dry ingredients into butter or shortening mixture.
- Then mix in chopped nuts.
- Evenly pour dough into a lightly buttered and floured 9-inch [23-cm] square cake pan.
- Bake cake into preheated oven for 35 to 40 minutes.
- Unmold cake onto a wire rack; leave to cool completely.
