Chocolate Cake

Servings: 1 [9-inch / 23-cm] square cake
  • 1 1/2 cups [210 g] flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon [2.5 mL] baking soda
  • 2 leveled teaspoons [10 mL] baking powder
  • 1/4 cup [60 mL] cocoa powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon [1 mL] salt
  • 1/3 cup [75 g] butter or shortening
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup [250 mL] brown sugar
  • 1 cup [250 mL] sour milk
  • 1 cup [250 mL] chopped nuts
  • Preheat oven to 350°F [180°C].
  • Sift together flour, baking soda, baking powder, cocoa powder and salt.
  • Cream butter or shortening; beat in egg and brown sugar.
  • Alternately with sour milk, mix dry ingredients into butter or shortening mixture.
  • Then mix in chopped nuts.
  • Evenly pour dough into a lightly buttered and floured 9-inch [23-cm] square cake pan.
  • Bake cake into preheated oven for 35 to 40 minutes.
  • Unmold cake onto a wire rack; leave to cool completely.
