- 1/3 cup [75 g] shortening
- 1/2 cup [100 g] sugar
- 1 egg, at room temperature
- 1 3/4 cups [245 g] flour
- 1 teaspoon [5 mL] baking powder
- 1 pinch salt
- 1/2 teaspoon [2.5 mL] cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon [2.5 mL] ground clove
- 1/2 teaspoon [2.5 mL] ground ginger
- 1 teaspoon [5 mL] baking soda
- 3/4 cup [190 mL] sour milk
- 1/2 cup [125 mL] molasses

- Preheat oven to 375°F [190°C].
- Beat together shortening, sugar and egg.
- Sift together flour, baking powder, salt and ground cinnamon and ginger.
- Dilute baking soda into sour milk, then mix in molasses.
- Alternately with sour milk mixture, mix sifted dry ingredients into first mixture.
- Pour dough into a buttered floured bread pan.
- Bake bread into preheated oven, for 30 minutes.
- Unmold done gengerbread onto a wire rack; leave to cool completely.
