- 1/4 cup [60 g] butter
- 2 eggs, really well beaten
- 4 cups [560 g] flour
- 2 teaspoons [10 mL] baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon [2.5 mL] salt
- 3/4 cup [150 g] sugar
- 1 teaspoon [5 mL] baking soda
- 1 teaspoon [5 mL] vinegar
- Milk
- Approximately 1 ounce [30 mL] gin or any other desired alcoholic beverage, to prevent doughnuts from absorbing too much grease
- Shortening

- Cream butter before mixing in beaten eggs.
- Well sift together flour, baking powder, salt and sugar.
- Into a 1-cup [250-mL] measuring cup, dilute baking soda into vinegar.
- Then pour in enough milk to get 1 cup [250 mL] liquid.
- Stir in gin or other alcoholic beverage.
- Alternately with milk mixture, mix flour mixture into butter mixture.
- Roll dough until approximately 1/2 inch [1.3-cm] thick; cut doughnuts using a doughnut cutter, or a drinking glass and a thimble.
- Into a large casserole, heat approximately 4 inches [10 cm] deep shortening to 360°F [182°C].
- Add 3 or 4 doughnuts to hot shortening.
- Fry on one side until golden, turn over and fry doughnuts on other side, until golden.
- Remove doughnuts, one at a time, using a slotted spoon; leave doughnuts to drip.
- Repeat with remaining dough.
