- 3 eggs
- 1/2 cup [115 g] butter
- 1 cup [200 g] sugar
- 4 cups [560 g] flour
- 4 teaspoons [20 mL] baking powder
- 1 1/2 cups [375 mL] milk
- 1 1/2 cups [340 g] shortening

- Beat together eggs, butter and sugar until smooth.
- Mix togehter flour and baking powder.
- Slowly mix flour mixture, alternately with milk, into first mixture.
- Roll dough until approximately 1/2 inch [1.3 cm] thick; using a doughnut cutter or a drinking glass and a thimble, cut dough into doughnut shapes.
- Into a large casserole, heat shortening until a thermometer registers 360°F [182°C].
- Brown 3 or 4 doughnuts at a time on one time into hot fat; turn doughnuts around and brown on other side.
- Using a slotted spoon, remove doughnuts from hot fat; leave to drain onto paper toweling.
