Love Squares

  • 1/2 cup [115 g] butter or margarine
  • 1 cup [200 g] sugar
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 1 cup [140 g] flour
  • 1 teaspoon [5 mL] baking powder
Garnishing
  • 1 cup [250 mL] chopped nuts
  • 1 cup [250 mL] stoned chopped dates
  • 2 egg whites
  • 1 teaspoon [5 mL] vanilla
  • 1 cup [250 mL] brown sugar
  • Preheat oven to 350°F [180°C].
  • Cream butter or margarine; mix in sugar and egg yolks.
  • Sift together flour and baking powder; well mix into first mixture.
  • Evenly pour dough into a greased 8-inch [20-cm] square cake pan.
  • Into a bowl, well mix together garnishing chopped nuts and dates; evenly sprinkle over dough.
  • Beat egg whites until foamy; beat in vanilla and brown sugar, until stiff
  • Evenly spread mixture over chopped nuts and dates mixture.
  • Bake into preheated oven for approximately 30 to 35 minutes, until golden brown.
  • Leave to cool completely, before cutting into squares.
