- 4 tablespoons [60 g] butter
- 1/2 cup [100 g] sugar
- 1 egg
- 2 cups [280 g] flour
- 1 teaspoon [5 mL] baking soda
- 1/2 cup [125 mL] milk
- 1/2 cup [125 mL] water
- 1 cup [250 mL] raisins and/or chopped nuts, or to taste

- Preheat oven to 375°F [190°C].
- Cream butter, then beat in sugar and egg.
- Sifat together flour and baking soda.
- Mix raisins and/or chopped nuts into dyr ingredients.
- Mix together milk and water.
- Alternately with milk/water mixture, mix dry ingredients into first mixture.
- Pour dough into a buttered and floured square 9-inch [23-cm] cake pan.
- Bake into preheated oven, for 35 minutes.
- Remove from oven and leave cake to cool for a few minutes.
- Unmold cake onto a wire rack; leave to cool completely.
