- 4 tablespoons [60 mL] cooking oil
- 1 pound [454 g] ground beef
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 [15 1/2-ounce / 440 mL] can tomato sauce
- 1 [29-ounce / 824-mL] can tomato puree
- 1 [6-ounce / 170-mL] can tomato paste
- 1 1/2 cups [375 mL] water
- 1 teaspoon [5 mL] salt
- 1/2 teaspoon [2.5 mL] pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon [2.5 mL] oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon [2.5 mL] red pepper, optional
- 2 pounds [900 g] Italian or country-style sausages, into pieces

- Heat 2 tablespoons [30 mL] of the cooking oil into a frying pan.
- Brown ground beef into hot oil until almost browned.
- Add chopped onion and continue browning until onion is tender.
- Pour meat and onion into 3 1/2-quart [3,5-L] crock pot.
- Add tomato puree, tomato sauce, tomato paste, water, salt, pepper, oregano and, if desired, red pepper.
- Heat remaining 2 tablespoons [30 mL] of the cooking oil into frying pan.
- Brown sausage pieces into hot oil.
- Add sausages to sauce in crock pot.
- Cook on low, for 12 hours.
