Apple Strudel

  • 2 cups [280 g] flour
  • 3 teaspoons [15 mL] baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon [2.5 mL] salt
  • 2 tablespoons [30 g] sugar
  • 4 tablespoons [60 g] golden butter flavored shortening
  • 2/3 to 3/4 cup [160 to 190 mL] whole milk
  • Melted butter
  • 3 cups [750 mL] grossly chopped peeled apples
  • 1/2 cup [115 g] sugar
  • 1 teaspoon [5 mL] cinnamon or apple pie spices
  • Any white frosting, to taste
  • Chopped nuts, to taste
  • Maraschino cherries [to decorate]
  • Preheat oven to 425°F [220°C].
  • Sift together flour, baking powder, salt and 2 tablespoons [30 g] sugar.
  • Cut golden shortening into flour mixture; stir in enough milk to get a light dough.
  • Lightly knead dough onto a floured surface.
  • Roll dough into a 1/4-inch [6-mm] thick rectangle.
  • Using a pastry brush, evenly brush dough with a little melted butter.
  • Evenly cover dough with chopped apples.
  • Sprinkle apples with remaining 1/2 cup [115 g] sugar, then with cinnamon or apple pie spices.
  • Roll dough, jelly roll fashion way.
  • Transfer roll onto a greased baking sheet shaping roll into half a circle.
  • Bake into preheated oven for 20 to 25 minutes.
  • Frost still hot strudel with white frosting.
  • Sprinkle frosting with chopped nuts.
  • Decorate strudel with Maraschino cherries.
